Other than rankings which follow certain criteria, how do I know which is the best university for biomedicine?

I am applying to University in the United Kingdom and Ireland. I have been looking at rankings such as those of 'The Times' and 'The Guardian', however the fluctuation in the ranking over the last 3 years among certain universities has encouraged a degree of skepticism among my friends and myself as to how reliable they are. I am considering applying for bio-medicine and would appreciate any additional information regarding universities offering this course, such as what they have to offer me both academically and socially. I am predicted 4 A's at As level and am applying within the next few months.
